We have put together a quick guide to help you get started and downloading within minutes:

Overview of topics

1. After registration

  • During registration, you will receive an email from us with the subject 'Your login data for UseNeXT', which contains your login details for both the member's area and the software.

2. Downloading free software

  • After registration you will be automatically logged in to your member's area where you can download and install the software.

3. Configuring software

  • The UseNeXT software launches automatically after installation.
  • When starting the programme for the first time, you will be requested to enter login data for the newsserver. Please enter the username and password from the 'Your login data for UseNeXT' email. You also have the possibility of automatically transferring your access information into the Tangysoft client. Simply click on the 'Transferring the login data' button in the member area under 'Software'.

4. Finding and downloading files

  • After entering your login data, the homepage from UseNeXT will open. Here, you can start a targeted search for files in the top left.

  • Searching for images:

    • To search for images in the Tangysoft Client,
    • Click on 'Search' in the upper symbol bar
    • Select 'Images'
    • Enter you desired search term
    • Click on 'Search' or press 'Enter'

  • Searching for small files (<15 MB):

    • Open a search window by clicking on 'Search' in the top symbol bar
    • Select 'Files' in the search window.
    • Enter your desired search term and click on 'Search'
    • The search results will now display individual files, which you are able to download at maximum speed with a double click.

  • Searching for larger files (>15 MB):

    • Larger files are split up in Usenet and pooled in so-called file groups. Searches will always display file groups in the results as standard.
    • If your file group was found, you have two options of how to proceed:
      • Download Wizard (recommended):
        Select the desired file group and then click on the 'Download' button. Next, the overview page of the Download Wizard will open, providing you with a preview of the unpacked files. You can initiate the download by clicking on 'Start download'. The files are then downloaded and automatically repaired and unpacked (making point 5 of this guide redundant). You can then monitor progress under 'Wizard'.
      • Manual download:
        One double click on the displayed file group opens a window which shows all contained files. Click on 'Selected all' in the upper icon bar.. This marks all files in the file group. You can initiate the download of the selected files by clicking on 'Download' and you are then able to monitor progress under 'Transfer list'.


5. Unpacking files

  • You can find the downloaded items by clicking on Files:

  • In the case of larger files, you will have a contents list containing files such as 'xxxxxxxxx.partxx.rar' or 'xxxxx.r01' in the downloads directory. These files are 'compressed' - in other words, they have been split into so-called 'archives'.
  • Select one of the files and click on 'Unpack file'. If the archive is not complete, you will be notified of the missing archive parts, which can usually be found using the search feature or reconstructed using the PAR2 files. If the archive is complete, you can select the target directory in which you want your archive files to be extracted.

If you were really unable to find your desired file, then try it a few days later. Often, missing files are posted again at a later date.

6. Manage User-Defined Categories


You can create your own categories with selected newsgroups and search Usenet within these categories for specific topics.
  • Adding categories:

    • Click “Home” on the top toolbar
    • Click “Add” to view a list of all available newsgroups
    • If you wish to create a new category and give it a name, enter the desired designation in the “Name” field
    • Now search for the desired newsgroups by scrolling through the list, using the search field to find newsgroups, or select “View” in the dropdown menu to restrict the choice to binary newsgroups or text newsgroups
    • Tick the newsgroups that you wish to add to your category and then click “OK”

    • Your newly created category now appears under “My Categories”


    Tip:
    If you are only interested in specific types of content, you can limit your search by category. To do this, simply select the desired category via the drop-down menu to the left of the search field.
  • Deleting categories:

    • Click “Home” on the top toolbar
    • Under “My Categories”, select the category that you wish to delete
    • Click “Remove” to remove the selected category from your categories list

You can also export the categories you have created and share them with your friends:
  • Exporting categories:

    • Click “Export” and select a location for saving the export file (categories.dat)
    • Then click “Save” to save the categories you have created in an export file at the selected location
    • You can send this file to friends and acquaintances, so that they can import the categories you have created into their clients

  • Importing categories:

    • Click “Home”, and then click “Import”
    • Select the file on your hard disk that you want to import (with file suffix “.dat”) and then click “Open”
    • Now you will see the categories from the imported file in your client under “My Categories”

7. Manage Favorites


You can use this function to save specific search requests, so that you do not have to enter the search term again.
  • Click “Search” on the top toolbar
  • Enter the desired term in the search field and press “Enter”
  • Add this search to your favorites by selecting “Favorites” and “Add to favorites…”, then Click “OK” to confirm

  • If you wish to search for file groups matching this search term in future, simply select this favorite in the dropdown menu and click “Search”

  • Under “Favorites” > “Manage favorites”, you can open, delete and rename your favorites or copy their links
