If you’ve ever used a Mac, you should know that there’s a pretty useful keyboard shortcut Command + ` that allows you to switch between windows of the same app, like Chrome, Firefox, Onenote, Excel, Word, etc. For those of you using Windows 10, you know that it has a keyboard shortcut that does the same thing, but not so efficiently. The “Alt + Tab” Windows 10 shortcut allows you to move through windows of all active apps. “Alt + Shift + Tab” does that in reverse order. However, it’s not as fast since you have to go through all active apps to switch between windows of the same app.

How to Switch Between Windows of the Same App on Windows 10?

  • Place the desired app (for me, it was Chrome) in the #1 position of the order of the Windows 10 taskbar. You can set it at any position in the order, but #1 is generally easy to remember to use with your most used app.

  • Press the “Win + 1” keyboard shortcut. It will bring an Aero preview of all the Windows of the app.
  • Press the same shortcut again to switch to the windows you want to open from the Aero preview. If you want to do the switching in reverse, press “Windows + Shift + 1”.

  • That’s it. Just press “Alt + `” on your keyboard to switch between windows of the same app. It’s latter key of the shortcut is also called “Backtick”, it is the key before the number “1” on the US Keyboard layout.

Pros of this method: Very useful utility. Lightweight. Suffices the basic function.
